Overview

Inner retinal neurons are a group of specialized cells—including bipolar cells, amacrine cells, and retinal ganglion cells—that reside in the inner layers of the retina (NIH, 2023). Their primary biological function is to integrate and process visual signals from photoreceptors before transmitting this information to the brain's visual cortex via the optic nerve (Purves et al., Neuroscience). These neurons are central to the pathology of several blinding diseases; for instance, retinal ganglion cell death is the hallmark of glaucoma, while the survival of these cells in retinitis pigmentosa makes them prime candidates for optogenetic vision restoration (Sahel et al., Nature Medicine, 2021). Therapeutic approaches targeting inner retinal neurons include neuroprotective agents like brimonidine to prevent cell death and gene therapies that introduce light-sensitive proteins into surviving cells (Nanoscope Therapeutics, 2023). Monitoring the health of these neurons is typically achieved through imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and functional tests like pattern electroretinography (pERG) (PubMed, 2022).
