It exists in nine stereoisomers, with myo-inositol being the most prevalent in the body[3][5][11]. Inositol is involved in multiple physiological processes, including cell membrane structure, insulin sensitivity, neurotransmitter signaling (supporting mood and brain health), and hormonal regulation, particularly in conditions like PCOS and metabolic disorders[1][6][14]. It is sometimes referred to as Vitamin B8 for historical reasons, but this is an outdated and incorrect classification[1][3][6]. Inositol is naturally present in foods such as fruits, nuts, grains, and beans, and is also available as a dietary supplement[6]. Its supplementation has been studied for benefits in mood, metabolic health, and reproductive function, but it is not considered a true vitamin or an essential nutrient for healthy adults[1][3][6].
