Overview

Inositol hexakisphosphate kinase 2 (IP6K2) is an intracellular enzyme that phosphorylates inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6) to produce inositol pyrophosphates, notably diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate (InsP7)[6]. IP6K2 plays critical roles in diverse biological processes, including energy homeostasis, apoptosis, mitochondrial function, neuroprotection, and regulation of cellular signaling. It is distinct for its regulatory effects on mitochondria, influencing cellular responses to metabolic and oxidative stress, and modulates both catalytic (kinase-dependent) and non-catalytic (structural or signaling) functions such as mitophagy and Hedgehog pathway activity[1][2][3][5][6]. Dysregulation of IP6K2 has been implicated in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and mitochondrial disorders, marking it as a relevant therapeutic and biological target[2][3][5].
