Inositol monophosphatase (IMPase) is a crucial enzyme involved in the regulation of intracellular myo-inositol levels, which are essential for the synthesis of phosphatidylinositol and various inositol phosphate signaling molecules. It catalyzes the dephosphorylation of inositol monophosphate to produce free myo-inositol and inorganic phosphate. It is a homodimer with an active site containing metal binding sites. IMPase is a drug target for psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder, with lithium acting as an inhibitor.
Lithium inhibits IMPase activity, thereby modulating signaling pathways associated with mood stabilization.
