Inositol Trisphosphate Receptor (IP3R)

Target
IP3R
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The inositol trisphosphate receptor (IP3R) is a calcium channel primarily located on the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. It is activated by the binding of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3), leading to the release of calcium ions into the cytosol. This calcium release initiates various downstream cellular responses. The functional channel is a tetramer formed by four identical subunits. There are three main isoforms encoded by ITPR1, ITPR2, and ITPR3. IP3Rs play a critical role in signal transduction, metabolism, cell proliferation, and other physiological processes. Disruption of this pathway has been implicated in several diseases.
