Overview

The inositol trisphosphate receptor (IP3R) is a calcium (Ca²⁺) channel located primarily on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of animal cells. It is activated by binding to inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3), a second messenger. Upon activation, IP3Rs mediate the release of Ca²⁺ from ER stores into the cytosol, initiating and regulating diverse cellular processes.
