The insect cuticular lipid layer is the outermost component of the epicuticle, consisting of a complex blend of long-chain hydrocarbons, wax esters, and fatty acids (Lockey, 1988 [PMID: 3071321]). Its most critical biological function is providing a waterproof barrier that prevents lethal desiccation, a necessity for terrestrial arthropod survival (Gibbs, 2002 [Journal of Insect Physiology, 48(4), 391-400]). Additionally, these lipids, particularly cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), serve as essential semiochemicals for mate recognition and social signaling (Howard & Blomquist, 2005 [Annual Review of Entomology, 50, 371-393]). In pest management and vector control, this layer is a primary target for desiccant insecticides such as diatomaceous earth and silica aerogels, which act by adsorbing or abrading the protective lipids (Subramanyam & Roesli, 2000). Disruption of this barrier leads to rapid, uncontrolled water loss and subsequent death of the insect. Furthermore, the lipid layer influences the penetration rate of contact-based chemical insecticides, making it a key factor in insecticide efficacy and resistance (Bagnères & Lorenzi, 2010 [Biology of Cuticular Hydrocarbons]).
