The insect larval gut epithelium is a layer of cells lining the midgut (and other regions) of insect larvae, primarily responsible for digestion, absorption of nutrients, immune defense against pathogens and regulation of ion and water movement between the gut lumen and the hemocoel[1][2][4]. The epithelium is functionally and regionally specialized, and in larvae grows by cell expansion with increased nuclear ploidy rather than cell division[1][2]. It serves as a selective barrier, is involved in the production of enzymes and antimicrobial peptides, secretes and maintains the peritrophic matrix (protecting the tissue from damage and infection), and, in some species, rapidly turns over in response to damage or environmental stress[1][3][4]. Because it is a tissue rather than a discrete molecule, it is studied for its role in nutrition, immunity, and insect pest control, but is not conventionally cataloged as a molecular therapeutic target.
