The insect voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) is a transmembrane protein essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials in the nervous system of insects. It is the primary molecular target for several major classes of insecticides, including DDT, pyrethroids, and sodium channel blocker insecticides (SCBIs). Insects typically possess a single VGSC gene that can produce multiple splice variants through alternative exon usage.
Pyrethroids and DDT: Bind to open channels, stabilizing them in an open state, causing prolonged sodium currents. SCBIs: Bind to the inactivated state of the channel, blocking ion flow.
