Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), also known as insulysin or insulin protease, is a zinc-binding metalloprotease that plays a central role in the degradation of insulin and several other bioactive peptides, including amyloid-β (Aβ). It is essential for regulating peptide hormone signaling cascades and maintaining blood glucose homeostasis. Genetic studies link IDE variants to type 2 diabetes mellitus susceptibility and Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis.
