IGFBP7-AS1 is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the IGFBP7 gene. It acts as a natural antisense transcript, partially complementary to IGFBP7 exon 1, and positively regulates IGFBP7 mRNA stability by forming sense–antisense RNA duplexes. IGFBP7-AS1 is enriched in the cytoplasm and enhances the expression of IGFBP7, a gene involved in cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Functional studies show IGFBP7-AS1 promotes odontogenic differentiation in dental stem cells and regulates viability and invasion of glioma cells, with high expression being a negative prognostic factor in glioblastoma. IGFBP7-AS1’s biological effects appear to be mediated chiefly by its regulatory impact on IGFBP7, rather than any independent protein-coding function. There is no evidence that IGFBP7-AS1 is a direct drug target, though its role in cancer and tissue engineering identifies it as a potential therapeutic or biomarker molecule.
