The insulin receptor (IR) is a transmembrane protein belonging to the receptor tyrosine kinase family. It is primarily responsible for mediating the effects of insulin, a key hormone in regulating glucose homeostasis, as well as playing roles in growth and metabolism. The IR is found on the surface of most cells throughout the human body.
Insulin binds to the extracellular domain, triggering autophosphorylation of the intracellular kinase domain and subsequent activation of downstream signaling pathways (e.g., PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK).
