Insulin Receptor Substrate 2 (IRS2)

Target
IRS2
Molecular classification
Cytoplasmic signaling adaptor protein
01

Overview

IRS2 is a key cytoplasmic signaling molecule that mediates the effects of insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), and other cytokines. It acts as a molecular adaptor between various receptor tyrosine kinases—such as the insulin receptor and IGF1R—and downstream effectors in multiple cellular pathways. Upon stimulation by its upstream receptors, IRS2 is phosphorylated on tyrosine residues, enabling it to recruit SH2 domain-containing proteins and propagate intracellular signals essential for metabolic regulation, cell growth, survival, proliferation, and differentiation. Dysregulation of IRS2 is implicated in diseases such as type 2 diabetes, PCOS and cancer.
