Overview

Insulin release from pancreatic beta cells is a tightly regulated physiological process essential for maintaining blood glucose homeostasis. Beta cells, located in the islets of Langerhans within the pancreas, are the sole source of insulin synthesis and secretion in mammals. Insulin is released primarily in response to elevated blood glucose levels but can also be modulated by other nutrients and hormones. The process involves glucose sensing, ATP production, K_ATP channel closure, membrane depolarization, calcium influx, and exocytosis of insulin-containing granules. Impaired beta cell function is central to the pathogenesis of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
