Insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells is a central physiological process for maintaining glucose homeostasis. Beta cells are specialized endocrine cells located within the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Their primary function is to synthesize, store, and release insulin—the only hormone capable of lowering blood glucose levels—along with amylin. Impaired beta cell function leads to insufficient insulin secretion, causing type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Thus understanding their regulation offers therapeutic targets for these diseases.
