Insulin Secretion by Transplanted β-Cells

Molecular classification
Cellular Process, Metabolic Process
01

Overview

Insulin secretion by transplanted β-cells refers to the ability of donor-derived or stem cell–derived pancreatic beta cells, once transplanted into a recipient (typically a person with diabetes), to sense blood glucose and release insulin in response. This process aims to restore physiological insulin production and glycemic control in individuals whose native beta cells are destroyed or dysfunctional, such as those with type 1 diabetes. The main therapeutic goal is restoration of endogenous-like insulin secretion for improved glycemic control without exogenous insulin injections. Limitations include progressive decline in function, immunogenicity, and the innate immune response.
