Insulin secretion by transplanted beta cells refers to the restoration of endogenous insulin production in individuals with type 1 diabetes through the transplantation of functional beta cells. These cells, derived from either donor pancreases or stem cells, are intended to replace the function of destroyed native beta cells. The transplanted cells respond to glucose fluctuations by secreting insulin, thereby regulating blood glucose levels. Successful transplantation aims to improve glycemic control, reduce or eliminate the need for exogenous insulin, and prevent severe hypoglycemic events. However, challenges such as immune rejection, autoimmune recurrence, and cell survival post-transplantation remain significant considerations.
