Insulin Secretion by Transplanted Pancreatic β-cells

Molecular classification
Cellular Process, Endocrine Function
01

Overview

Insulin secretion by transplanted pancreatic β-cells refers to the process in which β-cells, after being transplanted (often as part of islet transplantation therapy for diabetes), sense blood glucose levels and release insulin accordingly. These cells are specialized endocrine cells located within the pancreatic islets of Langerhans and are solely responsible for producing and secreting insulin, a hormone essential for lowering blood glucose. The process involves glucose sensing, membrane depolarization, calcium influx, and insulin exocytosis, all tightly regulated to maintain glucose homeostasis. The success of transplantation depends on adequate cell mass, vascularization at the graft site, immune protection/tolerance, and preservation of intrinsic stimulus-secretion coupling mechanisms.
