HIV-1 integrase is a 32 kDa viral enzyme essential for the replication cycle of HIV-1. It catalyzes the integration of viral DNA into the host cell genome, a critical step that allows persistent infection and efficient viral replication. Integrase mediates two main reactions: 3'-Processing, and Strand Transfer. Integrase inhibitors block strand transfer activity by binding near or at the catalytic site—preventing incorporation of viral DNA into host chromosomes.
