Integrin alpha-2 (CD49b) is a protein encoded by the ITGA2 gene in humans. It forms part of the integrin α2β1 heterodimeric receptor, also known as VLA-2, which is a member of the integrin superfamily—transmembrane receptors that mediate cell adhesion to extracellular matrix components and participate in signal transduction. It mediates platelet adhesion to multiple types of collagen—important for platelet aggregation during hemostasis and is involved in cell motility, angiogenesis, and stemness regulation. Also plays roles in immune regulation, and implicated in immune escape mechanisms.
