Integrin alpha-6 (ITGA6) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that forms heterodimers with either the beta 1 (ITGB1) or beta 4 (ITGB4) subunits to create alpha6beta1 or alpha6beta4 integrins, both receptors for laminins. ITGA6 plays a critical structural role in hemidesmosomes of epithelial cells, anchoring epithelial layers to underlying tissue. It participates in cell adhesion, cell migration, and signal transduction affecting gene expression and cellular behavior. Mutations or dysregulation of ITGA6 are associated with genetic diseases like Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa with Pyloric Atresia and cancer.
