Overview

CD11b antigen is an essential component of innate immunity—serving both structural roles (adhesion/migration) and regulatory functions that modulate inflammation. Its broad expression among myeloid-derived immune cells makes it invaluable both clinically—as a diagnostic/prognostic tool—and experimentally—as an indicator of innate immune activity across tissues. It forms a heterodimer with CD18 to form the Mac-1 integrin. Mac-1 binds ligands such as iC3b, fibrinogen and factor X to mediate cell adhesion and phagocytosis. CD11b also plays a role in immune regulation.
