Integrin alpha V, encoded by the ITGAV gene in humans, is a subunit of integrins—heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha and a beta subunit. These proteins are essential for cell surface adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and play key roles in signal transduction. Alpha V can pair with several beta chains (Beta 1, Beta 3, Beta 5, Beta 6, Beta 8), forming distinct integrin receptors with unique ligand specificities. It mediates cell adhesion to ECM components and signal transduction influencing cell proliferation, survival, and migration. Dysregulation is associated with diseases including viral infection susceptibility and cancer.
