Integrin alpha4 (CD49d)

Target
CD49d
Molecular classification
Integrin, Cell adhesion molecule, Receptor
01

Overview

Integrin alpha4, also known as CD49d, is a transmembrane protein that functions as an integrin alpha subunit. It forms heterodimers with either the beta1 (CD29) or beta7 integrin subunits to create functional receptors on the cell surface. The most notable complexes are: α4β1 (VLA-4) and α4β7 (LPAM-1). Integrins containing the alpha 4 subunit play critical roles in cell adhesion, cell-cell adhesion, and trafficking of hematopoietic cells. Antagonists targeting integrin alpha 4 have been developed for inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis.
