Integrin alpha4-containing complexes are cell surface receptors formed by the pairing of the integrin alpha4 subunit (CD49d) with either a beta1 or beta7 subunit, resulting in α4β1 (VLA-4) and α4β7. These complexes mediate leukocyte adhesion to vascular endothelium via VCAM-1 during inflammation and facilitate lymphocyte homing to specific tissues such as gut mucosa through interaction with MAdCAM-1. They are therapeutic targets for autoimmune diseases.
