Overview

Integrin beta-1 (ITGB1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that serves as a critical subunit of the integrin family of cell surface receptors. Integrins are heterodimers composed of one alpha and one beta subunit; beta-1 pairs with at least 12 known alpha integrins to form a wide variety of receptors, mediating adhesion between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM). Beta-1 integrin is essential for bidirectional signaling—outside-in and inside-out—that governs cellular processes such as migration, proliferation, differentiation, and survival. It plays pivotal roles in development, tissue repair, immune response, angiogenesis, and tumor progression. Its diverse isoforms are expressed across many tissues and cell types, and its dysregulation is frequently implicated in cancer, fibrosis, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases. Therapeutically, integrin beta-1 is a validated drug target, but clinical application is challenged by its roles in normal tissue repair and immunity, necessitating careful risk-benefit evaluation.
