Integrin beta 5 (ITGB5)

Target
ITGB5
Molecular classification
Integrin, Receptor
01

Overview

Integrin beta 5 (ITGB5) functions as a subunit of integrins, which are transmembrane receptors involved in cell adhesion and signaling. It combines with alpha chains, notably alpha-V (ITGAV), to form heterodimeric integrins like αVβ5, acting as a receptor for extracellular matrix proteins such as fibronectin and vitronectin. It plays roles in cell adhesion, signaling pathways regulating apoptosis and migration, and is implicated in tumor progression and metastasis. ITGB5 interacts with proteins like PTK2, Annexin A5, and PAK4, influencing downstream signaling events. Elevated levels are observed in osteopetrosis, and genetic association studies link it to Parkinson's and villous adenocarcinoma.
