Overview

Integrin alpha E (CD103) pairs with integrin beta 7 (ITGB7) to form the heterodimeric integrin αEβ7 complex. The primary known ligand for αEβ7 is E-cadherin, an adhesion molecule on epithelial cells. This interaction mediates adhesion of intraepithelial T lymphocytes to epithelial cell layers. ITGAE plays roles in retention of lymphocytes within epithelial tissues, shaping intraepithelial leukocyte morphogenesis, and mediating immune surveillance at mucosal surfaces. CD103 is used as an immunohistochemical marker, notably in hairy cell leukemia.
