Inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain H3 (ITIH3) is an extracellular matrix protein, belonging to the protease inhibitor family and functioning as an acute phase protein. It plays crucial roles in the stabilization and assembly of the extracellular matrix, binding to hyaluronic acid, and modulating inflammation and immune responses. ITIH3 acts as a carrier of hyaluronan in serum and inhibits serine-type endopeptidases. It has been implicated in various disease states, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, inflammatory conditions, psychiatric disorders, and sepsis. Although ITIH3 has biomarker potential, particularly for rheumatoid arthritis, no specific drugs are currently known to interact with or directly target ITIH3.
