The intercellular matrix of the stratum corneum (SC) is a specialized extracellular environment between corneocytes, crucial for maintaining the skin’s barrier function and hydration. It's composed of lipids (ceramides, free fatty acids, cholesterol) and structural proteins (involucrin, loricrin, filaggrin, SPRs). These components form lamellar bilayers and cross-linked protein envelopes, providing a strong permeability barrier, mechanical strength, and protection against pathogens.
