Interferential current (IFC)

Target
IFC
01

Overview

Interferential current refers to a physical therapy technique in which two medium-frequency alternating electrical currents (typically around 4000 Hz each) are applied to the body in such a way that they cross or "interfere" within the tissues, generating a lower frequency "beat" current that penetrates more deeply and is believed to provide pain relief, reduce muscle spasm, improve circulation, and promote tissue healing. It is distinct from transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and is used especially for treating musculoskeletal pain, edema, and some neurological or gastrointestinal conditions. Interferential current is **not a biochemical or pharmacological target** but a medical device-based intervention.
