Interferon alpha-1 (IFN-α1) is a type I interferon, a monomeric cytokine protein that plays a critical role in antiviral defense, immune modulation, and inhibition of cell proliferation. It exerts its effects by binding to the IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor, activating the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, and inducing the expression of hundreds of antiviral and immunomodulatory genes. While recombinant forms are used therapeutically, native human IFN-alpha subtypes have distinct properties. IFN-α1 increases HLA-II expression and inhibits tumor growth *in vitro* but has weak NK/B-cell activation.
