Interferon alpha 11 pseudogene (IFNA11P)

Target
IFNA11P
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene; it is not a functional cytokine, receptor, enzyme, or classical protein family member)
01

Overview

IFNA11P, also known as "interferon alpha 11 pseudogene," is a non-functional copy of the gene encoding interferon alpha 11, usually located alongside the functional interferon alpha genes in the genome[1][3]. Pseudogenes like IFNA11P are characterized by sequence homology to protein-coding genes but contain mutations—such as premature stop codons or frameshifts—that prevent translation into a functional protein[1]. They are not translated into proteins and do not play direct roles in interferon signaling, immunity, or disease. All classical biological activities of interferon alpha—such as antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects—are the property of functional interferon alpha genes, not their pseudogenes[3][4][5].
