Overview

Interferon alpha-13 (IFNA13) is a member of the type I interferon family of cytokines, structurally and functionally related to other IFN-alpha subtypes. It is encoded by the IFNA13 gene located on human chromosome 9 and contributes to host defense against viral infections by initiating antiviral responses and modulating both innate and adaptive immunity[1][2][3][4]. IFNA13 exerts its effects by binding to the ubiquitously expressed interferon alpha/beta receptor complex (IFNAR1/2), triggering the JAK-STAT pathway and leading to upregulation of interferon-stimulated genes. Apart from its established role in antiviral defense, IFNA13 has been implicated in immune regulation, inflammation, and as a pathogenic factor in certain autoimmune diseases. Recombinant human interferon alpha therapies exploit these properties for the treatment of infections (e.g., hepatitis B and C), certain cancers, and multiple sclerosis, though adverse effects and risk of autoimmunity remain key therapeutic challenges[1][2][4][5].
