Overview

Interferon alpha-16 (IFNA16) is one of the type I interferon alpha subtypes, which are cytokines predominantly involved in the host defense against viral infections and in the modulation of immune responses[1][2]. Like other type I interferons, IFNA16 binds to the heterodimeric interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR1/IFNAR2) on the cell surface, initiating the JAK-STAT signaling cascade that triggers expression of a variety of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs)[1][2]. These ISGs mediate antiviral activity, regulation of cell proliferation, and modulation of other elements of innate and adaptive immunity. IFNA16, along with other interferon alphas, plays roles in infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic diseases. While recombinant forms of other interferon alpha subtypes are used therapeutically, IFNA16 itself is not presently used as a recombinant drug, though its activity is similar to the broader family. Key clinical considerations mirror those of the interferon alpha class, with systemic immune activation and potential for adverse inflammatory or autoimmune effects.
