IFNA2B encodes interferon alpha-2b, a type I interferon cytokine that plays a central role in the innate immune response against viral infections and has significant antitumor properties. It binds to the IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complex, activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway and inducing the expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). Therapeutically, recombinant IFNA2B and pegylated forms are used to treat viral infections and certain cancers.
