Overview

Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) production is the process by which immune cells—primarily activated T lymphocytes (such as Th1 CD4+ cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells), natural killer (NK) cells, some γδ T cells, and, to a lesser extent, antigen-presenting cells—produce and secrete the cytokine interferon gamma in response to immune stimuli[1][2][5][7]. IFN-γ is a type II interferon and a major regulator of innate and adaptive immunity, playing central roles in antiviral and antitumor defense, activation of macrophage microbicidal activity, immunomodulation (e.g., upregulation of MHC class I and II), and orchestration of inflammatory responses[1][6][7]. The production of IFN-γ is tightly regulated and is induced by cytokines such as IL-12 and IL-18, as well as antigenic stimulation[4][5]. Dysregulation of IFN-γ production is associated with pathological conditions including autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and certain infections and cancers[1][7].
