Interferon gene activation refers to the cellular processes that lead to the transcription and expression of interferons (IFNs) and interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). Interferons are cytokines produced in response to pathogens, particularly viruses, and play a central role in innate immunity by activating antiviral defenses, modulating immune responses, and influencing cell growth. The process involves pathogen recognition by PRRs, activation of transcription factors like IRF3/IRF7/NF-kB, IFN production and secretion, receptor binding, JAK-STAT pathway activation, and ISG expression. Dysregulation can result in chronic inflammation or autoimmune diseases, while impaired activation increases susceptibility to infections.
