Interferon-induced 2′–5′ adenylate synthetase (OAS) is a family of enzymes that play a central role in the innate immune response to viral infections. Induced by interferons and activated by double-stranded RNA, OAS enzymes synthesize 2-5A oligomers, which in turn activate RNase L to degrade viral and cellular RNA, inhibiting virus replication. OAS enzymes also participate in apoptosis regulation and growth control.
OAS enzymes are induced by interferons and activated by dsRNA, catalyzing the synthesis of 2-5A oligomers from ATP. These oligomers activate RNase L, leading to RNA degradation and inhibition of viral replication.
