Interferon induced transmembrane protein 1 pseudogene (IFITM1 pseudogene)

Target
IFITM1 pseudogene
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, non-coding RNA locus
01

Overview

Interferon induced transmembrane protein 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000228112) is a processed pseudogene derived from IFITM1, a member of the interferon-inducible transmembrane protein family that plays a role in antiviral immunity. Unlike the protein-encoding IFITM1 gene, this pseudogene does not produce a functional transmembrane protein but may, like other pseudogenes, have rare regulatory functions through transcription of noncoding RNAs. The functional IFITM1 protein restricts the entry of diverse viral pathogens into host cells, but its pseudogene derivative is considered "nonfunctional DNA" unless specific regulatory RNA roles are demonstrated.

Mechanism of action

None. Since this gene is non-coding, there are no known mechanisms of drug action involving it.

03

Biological functions

In some cases, pseudogenes can have regulatory roles. For certain IFITM pseudogenes (e.g., IFITM4P), there is evidence they may encode long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that regulate related genes' expression and contribute indirectly to antiviral responses by modulating immune gene transcription.ENSG00000228112 specifically has not been shown to have a characterized function.
04

Disease associations

Pseudogenes generally do not have direct disease roles, though indirectly they might modulate immunity. For IFITM pseudogenes, rare regulatory roles have been suggested in antiviral defense by influencing expression of functional IFITM genes. There is no direct evidence for a disease role for ENSG00000228112.
