Overview

Interferon-induced transmembrane protein 10 (IFITM10) is a member of the dispanin family of proteins, structurally related to, but functionally distinct from, canonical IFITMs (such as IFITM1-3). IFITM10 is predicted to be located in the plasma membrane and may play roles in cellular processes beyond the classical antiviral defense associated with other IFITMs. Unlike IFITM1/2/3, IFITM10 lacks key interferon-stimulated response elements and is not robustly induced by interferons, suggesting divergent regulatory mechanisms. IFITM10 shows tissue-specific expression, notably in smooth muscle, esophagus, and trachea. Elevated expression has been linked to favorable early diagnosis in gastric cancer, and the CTSD-IFITM10 fusion has been identified in breast cancer, indicating possible functions in tumorigenesis or as a biomarker. Diminished expression is correlated with impaired immune responses in certain viral infections, but overall, IFITM10 remains poorly characterized, with no clear mechanistic information or established role as a therapeutic target.

Mechanism of action

No mechanism of drug action is defined for IFITM10, as it is not an established or characterized drug target

03

Biological functions

Immune response (putative, as part of the IFITM family but lacking canonical interferon response elements)Potential cell proliferation modulator (as indicated in cancer settings)Possible tumorigenesis association
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably gastric and breast cancer, as a biomarker and possible contributor via gene fusions)Immune response/possibly infection (lower expression associated with impaired antiviral response in some settings, such as SARS-CoV-2 retest-positive patients)
05

Biomarkers

Elevated IFITM10 expression in gastric cancer (early-stage biomarker suggestion)CTSD-IFITM10 fusion transcript in breast cancer (potential diagnostic marker)
