Overview

The interferon-induced transmembrane protein pseudogene (ENSG00000238231) is a non-functional genetic element related to the IFITM protein-coding gene family. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences that resemble functional genes but have lost their ability to encode active proteins due to accumulated mutations. While the IFITM gene family encodes proteins critical for antiviral immunity, the pseudogene itself does not generate a functional protein and thus is not a molecular target for drug intervention or a direct disease biomarker. Recent studies suggest that some pseudogenes may play regulatory roles by producing non-coding RNAs or acting within competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, but no such functional evidence exists for this specific pseudogene. It should not be considered a therapeutic target.

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

While protein-coding IFITM genes perform antiviral functions and regulate immune responses, the pseudogene itself does not encode a functional protein and thus does not have direct biological function. Emerging research suggests pseudogenes may act through non-coding RNA mechanisms or compete for regulatory molecules, but specific function for ENSG00000238231 is not established.
04

Disease associations

None directly attributed to ENSG00000238231. Some pseudogenes have been implicated in diseases such as cancer and immune regulation, usually through noncoding RNA activity, but no direct evidence for this pseudogene is available.
