Overview

Interferon omega 1 pseudogene 9 (IFNWP9) is a non-coding, non-functional pseudogene found in the human genome within the type I interferon omega gene cluster on chromosome 9. The human interferon omega gene family consists of one functional gene (IFNW1) and several non-functional pseudogenes. Unlike the functional IFNW1 gene which encodes interferon omega-1, IFNWP9 and other omega pseudogenes do not produce proteins and are not considered therapeutic targets. Pseudogenes may arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically do not have biological activity. Only the functional IFNW1 gene gives rise to interferon omega protein, which acts as a cytokine in the immune response. The rest, including IFNWP9, are classified as pseudogenes and do not contribute to canonical interferon activity. These pseudogenes do not belong to molecular families such as receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor and have no documented physiological or pathological function in humans.
