Interferon Response Element (IRE)

Target
IRE
Molecular classification
DNA regulatory element
01

Overview

Interferon response elements (IREs) are specific DNA sequences located in the promoter regions of genes that mediate the transcriptional response to interferons. These elements serve as binding sites for transcription factors—most notably, members of the interferon regulatory factor (IRF) family—which are activated upon interferon signaling. Upon binding of activated IRFs, transcription of type I interferons and hundreds of downstream interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) is initiated, establishing an antiviral state and modulating immune responses.
