Overview

Interhemispheric facilitation is a neurophysiological phenomenon describing the excitatory influence of one hemisphere’s brain region—most often the motor cortex—on its contralateral homolog, mediated by neural projections through the corpus callosum.[1][3][4] This facilitation is measured experimentally using transcranial magnetic or electrical stimulation, particularly by observing the effects of a conditioning stimulus on neural activity or motor evoked potentials. It is important for integrated bimanual movement control and can be modulated by task, context, and underlying neural circuitry. The process coexists with interhemispheric inhibition, with both contributing to fine motor coordination, and may be altered by age, polymorphisms (e.g., BDNF), and pathology such as callosal lesions, stroke, or neurodegenerative diseases.[2][4]
