Interleukin-1 refers primarily to two distinct but related proteins: IL-1α and IL-1β. Both are potent proinflammatory cytokines produced mainly by macrophages during defensive reactions. The IL-1 family consists of 11 structurally similar cytokines (including IL-18, IL-33, and others), all involved in regulating or controlling inflammation. Excessive or uncontrolled activity is linked with various pathologies including autoimmune diseases; therapeutic blockade using recombinant antagonists or antibodies has proven effective in some human disorders.
