Interleukin-1 receptor-like 1 (IL1RL1), also known as ST2, is a member of the interleukin-1 receptor family that functions as a receptor for interleukin-33 (IL-33). It exists in two main isoforms: a membrane-bound form (ST2L) and a soluble form (sST2). IL1RL1/ST2 is involved in immune regulation, inflammation, and cardiovascular health, with sST2 identified as a biomarker for heart failure prognosis and cardiac disease progression.
sST2 acts as a decoy receptor by binding free IL-33, thereby inhibiting its beneficial signaling through membrane-bound ST2L. Membrane-bound ST2 (ST2L) signals via MAP kinase pathways upon IL-33 binding.
