Overview

Interleukin 1 receptor-like 1 (IL1RL1), also known as ST2, is a receptor belonging to the interleukin-1 receptor family. It exists in two main isoforms: a membrane-bound form (ST2L) that functions as a cell surface receptor for interleukin-33 (IL-33), and a soluble form (sST2) that acts as a decoy for IL-33. The IL-33/ST2 signaling pathway plays important roles in regulating immune responses, particularly in allergic inflammation and asthma, and has significant effects on cardiac tissue, where it can mediate cardioprotective effects. Soluble ST2 is a biomarker for heart failure.

Mechanism of action

sST2 acts as a decoy receptor, binding IL-33 and preventing it from interacting with membrane-bound ST2L, thus inhibiting downstream signaling.
