Interleukin 1 Receptor Type II (IL-1RII)

Target
IL-1RII
Molecular classification
Receptor, Interleukin Receptor Family, Decoy Receptor
01

Overview

Interleukin-1 Receptor Type II (IL-1RII) is a member of the interleukin-1 receptor family and functions as a decoy receptor. It binds interleukin-1α (IL-1α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), sequestering them away from the signaling-capable type I receptor complex, thereby preventing downstream inflammatory signal transduction and cell activation. Both membrane-bound and soluble forms exist, with the soluble form capable of binding free cytokines in circulation or tissue fluids. IL-1RII plays a crucial role in controlling excessive inflammation, particularly in macrophages, and its dysregulation is implicated in inflammatory diseases like arthritis.

Mechanism of action

Acts as a decoy receptor, binding IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-1Ra to prevent their interaction with the signaling-competent IL-1RI, thus inhibiting downstream inflammatory signaling.
