The Interleukin-1 (IL-1) secretion pathway refers to the processes by which IL-1 family cytokines, particularly IL-1β and IL-1α, are produced, matured, and secreted from cells. These cytokines are central mediators of inflammation and immune responses. Unlike most secreted proteins, IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is not exported via the conventional endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi route. The pathway relies on inflammasome-driven maturation followed by non-classical export involving gasdermin D pores rather than ER-Golgi trafficking. Its activity underpins both protective host responses and pathological inflammation depending on context.
